Clothing Collection Label 05/09/2009

Clothing collection labels are very common. They usually make claims about why the clothes are being collected and for whom. A van (typically unmarked) will call around on the day in question and labelled bags will be taken away.

There are a number of concerns I have about these collections and how they're advertised.

If a business is operating and recycling items, why doesn't it state that this is its business? Surely people would find this acceptable.

If you wish to trace a business activity, legitimate companies and businesses are listed on the Companies Registrations Office website and basic information can be found there for free.

If an organisation is an Irish charity, the Revenue Commissioners Website lists all organisations whose tax status has been acknowledged as being connected with charitable work.

There is no charities register in Ireland, so leaflets which list a "Charity Number" should probably be treated as disingenuous.

Irish charities have advised people to bring recyclable items to bring centres, or re-usable clothing to charity shops because of concerns about the activities of door-to-door collectors.

  1. Willie,

Your comments and concerns are spot on...

...I reckon any material collected in this manner gets sold on commercially with no money going to any particular charity.

If you are to donate clothing etc., go to recognised charity shops.

  2. we get at least one of those a day, don't even bother reading them... straight into the recycle bin.

the plastic bags are handy though for emptying the litter tray...

  3. I wouldn't see any problem at all with giving people used clothing to sell on, if they simply admitted upfront they were doing it.

The powers that be have dodged the question by referring to the law (Waste Management Act, 1996) which makes waste intended for recycling NOT waste and therefore the collector doesn't need to be regulated by the Local Authority issuing a Waste Collection Permit. On appication for such a permit, the types, quantities and DESTINATION of waste has to be declared.
